🏟️ The Olympics Are Back, and the Numbers Are Wild

Early numbers suggest something bigger is happening with Olympic audiences.

Welcome to this week’s edition of Sports Industry Weekly.
We’re breaking down the biggest headlines, boldest moves, and emerging trends shaping the business of sports. From major deals to industry shifts, here’s what you need to know. Let’s dive in.

NBC’s 2026 Winter Olympics coverage is delivering the kind of surge Comcast was hoping for earlier this year. Just days after Super Bowl LX saw a modest 2% dip in viewership, the Milan Games are averaging 26.5 million U.S. viewers across NBC, Peacock, cable networks, and digital platforms, a 93% increase over the comparable stretch of the 2022 Beijing Olympics.

The early momentum is historic. Sunday night’s primetime broadcast drew 42 million viewers, the most-watched Winter Olympics telecast in 12 years, while Peacock has already generated 5.3 billion minutes of consumption. That streaming total is 36% higher than the entirety of the 2022 Games and more than double the full 2018 Winter Olympics.

Several structural factors are driving the lift. A more favorable European time zone makes live viewing significantly easier for U.S. audiences, NBC has refined its multiplatform Olympics strategy following Paris 2024, and Nielsen’s new Big Data + Panel measurement system is capturing a broader slice of modern viewership. Combined with enhanced production technology and strong early U.S. medal performances, the Milan Games underscore how global events, when packaged effectively, remain one of the few properties capable of delivering true mass audiences in a fragmented media landscape.
